Welcome
As I near my fourth anniversary as Commissioner, I still am amazed that I get to share so much with Yukoners. I use the word "share" because this is exactly what happens. I am invited to many community events and am asked to support groups by becoming a honourary member or patron – so we truly share.

It is easy to get caught up in being busy. I try to ensure that I am focused on the task asked of me, whether it's to speak about a certain issue or just to be there to show support. I have the privilege of seeing first-hand the work and interests of many who provide services and create an environment of a caring society. It is heartwarming to be sure. On a more serious note I want to say a bit about my role.
There are some who question the value of the role of Commissioner or Head of State and I believe that we must continue tradition and ceremony. Through the years, our society has done away with many traditions such as singing the National Anthem each morning in school. As a country we will continue to create our own traditions and ideas and I believe that our roles are part of that creation. It has been challenging to say the least to introduce new thoughts and ideas, as many times I am told, "but this is the way it’s always been done."
The Commissioner is not Vice-Regal like a Lieutenant Governor or the Governor General, however by default that is exactly what the Commissioner becomes should a visiting dignitary or a Royal member come to visit Yukon. Being apolitical, we are not in a position to overrule a government but we are a safeguard; as in recent history where Her Excellency, Michaëlle Jean prorogued Parliament. This showed Canadians the major impact this office can have as a vital part of our parliamentary system. We are above the House of Commons or Legislative Assembly for this very reason. (Find out more about the Role of Commissioner.)
Many do not know the extensive administrative documents that we deal with as most are confidential. The Commissioner is informed of much, not all, that occurs within Yukon and nationally. With this responsibility, I must use discretion and diplomacy. I endeavour to maintain the ideals of Commissioner of Yukon with dignity and respect as I know the courtesy will be returned. This position is both a challenge and a blessing.
The challenge: whatever thoughts on my role, good or bad, I will continue to provide information and educate those who want to learn about this position. I will continue to try to be available as much as possible and meet as many of you as I am able, please forgive me if I forget a name or two.
The blessing: whatever thoughts on my role, good or bad, I will continue to enjoy every moment of my mandate and ensure that I give as much as I can to all I meet and interact with daily. I have grown as a person and I can only hope by being who I am that I have touched someone and made a difference.
