Geraldine Van Bibber

Commissioner of Yukon, December 2005 – present

Geraldine Van Bibber was born and raised in Dawson City, Yukon, and has roots in Fort McPherson, N.W.T. She is the former Administrator of Yukon (2001-2005).

Since her beginnings as a business partner of a family tourism company, she has played a pivotal role in the development of the Yukon travel industry. She was integral to the formation of the Yukon First Nation Tourism Association in 1992, and has been on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Tourism Commission, Aboriginal Tourism Canada, the Yukon Tourism Education Council, and the Government of Yukon's Business Development Fund.

Ms. Van Bibber is involved with many community initiatives, such as the Cancer Society. She champions and advocates many youth programs like the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Cadets, Junior Rangers, Scouts and Guides. She has put out the call to all schools to invite her to speak about her role and the history of the Office of Commissioner.

As the position evolves and changes with Yukon, Ms. Van Bibber is active and willing to share her time and knowledge whenever possible. Whether speaking to a small class at Yukon College, 300 people at B.C. Government House for the Duke of Edinburgh awards or challenging an issue at the Governor General’s conference, Ms. Van Bibber is thrilled to be able to touch as many people with her Yukon stories as possible.

Ms. Van Bibber and her husband Pat enjoy travelling in Yukon and traditional pastimes such as camping, hunting, fishing, and boating. The Van Bibbers have two children, Stuart & Ann-Marie.

Commissioner Van Bibber's Coat of Arms

Geraldine Van Bibber's personal coat of arms was issued by the Deputy Herald Chancellor in 2007.

The coat of arms shows a bright sun shining over Yukon fireweed. Two caribou with collars of Gwi'chin beadwork stand on either side. Below, Irish shamrocks grow out of the snow. The scene is guarded by a Yukon husky and Commissioner Van Bibber's personal motto, "Laughter heals all," runs beneath.
